Professional Highlights
Professor Bergado received his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from Utah State University as Fulbright Scholar. He joined the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) as Assistant Professor in 1982 and rose up the rank of Full Professor in 1997. He established the Asian Center for Soil Improvement and Geosynthetics (ACSIG) and has been its Director since 1999. He also formed the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) – Thailand Chapter in 2002 and served as its President since 2004. He took over as Secretary-General of the Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society (SEAGS) since 2001 and has been elected International Member of IGS Council (2008-2012). He has been GTE Coordinator (2000 to 2004), faculty Representative to the AIT Board of Trustees (2005 to 2007) and Executive Secretary of AIT Alumni Association (2001 to 2005). He received Best Paper Award from Canadian Geotechnical Journal, Distinguished Alumni Awards from AIT and Utah State University, Shamsher Prakash Award for Significant Geotechnical Contributions as well as IGS Achievement Award in 2006.
Research Interests
Professor Bergado started his research on probabilistic and reliability analyses of geotechnical properties and structures. Subsequently, he branched out to Ground Improvement and Geosynthetics, introduced this course at AIT and established the ACSIG Research Center as well as published 2 books, more than 100 journal articles and more than 200 conference papers in this area. He developed the pullout test apparatus and invented a new mechanically stabilized earth wall (MSE) construction. He also pioneered the use of prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) in soft Bangkok clay with subsequent combinations of vacuum and heat preloading including the innovative invention of Thermo-PVD system. He also did sustainable research work on recycled and lightweight geomaterials such as used rubber tire chips mixed with sand for reinforced embankment construction on soft Bangkok clay. Currently, his research involve new and creative ideas regarding deep cement mixing method (DMM) such as optimum cement contents, fundamental parameters as well as reinforced DMM called SDCM piles. For the near future, his research works will consist of risk reduction, vulnerability assessment and sustainable mitigation of rain-triggered landslides, debris flows and soil erosions.
