The Cream of the Crop: This Year's Academic Awardees

There will always be the best among the bests. Ten (10) graduands bagged prize awards during the 97th AIT Graduation held on 18 April 2003. Among them, two were honored by the AIT Alumni Association. The awards recognize their excellent performance in the master program by garnering the highest cumulative GPA in their respective field of study.

  DEB PRASAD JAISI
Engineering and Applied Geology
DEESWASMONGKUL PRIZE


A Nepali, Mr. Jaisi received his M.Sc. In Geology from Tribhuvan University (Nepal) in 1996. Before joining AIT, he worked as an Engineering Geologist at the ITECO Consultant, Kathmandu, Nepal. Dr. Ulrich Glawe supervised him in completing a thesis entitled "Study into the Hydraulic Behaviour of Geosynthetic and Granular Drainage Materials". The Deeswasmongkol Prize is awarded yearly from funds provided in 1996 by Dr. Niyom Deeswasmongkol, Project Manager of MDX Power Public Co., Ltd.

CHIN FUNG KEE PRIZE AND AIT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRIZE


Mr. Amnart from Thailand obtained his B.Eng. In Construction Engineering from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang (Thailand) in 2001. He completed a thesis entitled "Large Triaxial Tests of Shredded Rubber Tire with and without Sand Mixture and the Constitutive Model Verifications" under the supervision of Professor Dennes T. Bergado. The Tan Sri Professor Chin Fung Kee Prize was given in 1990 by students of the late Professor Chin Fung Kee, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya, and past President of the Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society. Aside from the Chin Fung Kee Prize, Mr. Amnart bagged the AIT Alumni Association Prize for being the top-ranked graduating student from the School of Civil Engineering.

MAHESH VARMA PRIZE


A Vietnamese, Mr. Nguyen received his B.Eng. In Civil Engineering from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Vietnam) in 1999. He served as an Assistant Lecturer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Vietnam) before joining AIT. He worked with Professor Stephen Olu Ogunlana in completing a thesis on "Policy Analysis for Improving Performance of a Construction Project by System Dynamics Modeling". The Mahesh Varma Prize was established from funds given by Professor Mahesh Varma, former AIT faculty member.

AOYAGI PRIZE


From Indonesia, Mr. Jaqin graduated with his B.Eng. In Civil Engineering from Petra Christian University (Indonesia) in 2000. Before joining AIT, Mr. Jaqin was an Engineer at PT. Wahana Teknologi Pekaryaja (Indonesia). Professor Fumio Yamazaki supervised him in completing a thesis on "Seismic Damage Assessment for Surabaya City, Indonesia Using Geographical Information System (GIS)". The Aoyagi Prize is awarded from funds provided by Professor Yukio Aoyagi, former AIT Faculty member. Mr. Jaqin joins Mr. Amnart in receiving another AIT Alumni Association Prize for being the top-ranked graduating student from the School of Civil Engineering.

WEN-JEI YANG PRIZE


Mr. Chakrit from Thailand obtained his B.Eng. In Civil Engineering from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) in 2001. Under the supervision of Dr. Pannapa Herabat, he completed a thesis on Infrastructure Maintenance Policy Analysis Including Risk and Uncertainty". The Professor Wen-Jei Yang Prize was established with funds contributed by Professor Wen-Jei Yang in 2002, Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. It was awarded for the first time this year.

Transportation Engineering
BARBARA AND JOHN HUGH JONES PRIZE


Two students obtained the highest cumulative GPA in the field of Transportation Engineering, Mr. Nopadon Kronprasert and Miss Pattharin Sarutipand. Mr. Nopadon from Thailand graduated with a B.Eng. (Hons.) degree in Civil Engineering from Chiangmai University (Thailand) in 2001. He worked intensively with Professor Yordphol Tanaboriboon in completing a thesis entitled "Development of a Computerized Support System for Road Safety Audit Risk Assessment in Thailand".

BARBARA AND JOHN HUGH JONES PRIZE


Miss Pattharin from Thailand obtained her B.Eng. In Civil Engineering from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) in 2000. She worked as a Junior Civil Engineer at INDEX International Group Company Limited, Thailand, before joining AIT. She completed a thesis entitled "Nonlinear Car-Following Models Incorporating a Second Leading Car and Excess Critical Speed" under the advisorship of Dr. Kazushi Sano. The Barbara and John Hugh Jones Prize is awarded from funds provided in 1994 by Professor John Hugh Jones, former Vice President for Academic Affairs of the Asian Institute of Technology.

Integrated Water Resources Management
HODAKA PRIZE


Two students obtained the highest cumulative GPA in the field of Integrated Water Resources Management, Mr. Le Viet Son and Miss Pratishtha Pradhan. Mr. Le from Vietnam obtained his B.Eng. In Irrigation and Land Improvement from Hanoi Water Resources University, Vietnam, in 1995. Before joining AIT, Mr. Le worked as a Senior Engineer at Hanoi Institute of Water Resources Planning, Vietnam. Under the supervision of Dr. David Andrew Luketina, he completed a thesis entitled "An Assessment of Neural Network Models for Predicting River Flow and Water Level".

Integrated Water Resources Management
HODAKA PRIZE


Miss Pradhan from Nepal obtained her B.Eng. In Civil Engineering from Tribhuvan University (Nepal) in 2000. Miss Pradhan was a Lecturer at Kantipur Engineering College, Nepal, before joining AIT. She was supervised by Dr. Mukand Singh Babel in completing a thesis on "Water Demand Forecast and Management Modelling: An Application to Kathmandu Valley, Nepal". The Hodaka Prize is awarded from funds contributed in 1996 by Professor Hiroyoshi Shi-igai, President of Yamanashi University (Japan), and a member of the AIT Board of Trustees from 1980 to 2000.

Water Supply, Drainage and Sewerage Engineering
CHAINARONG NA LAMPHUN PRIZE


Mr. Pichet from Thailand obtained his B.Eng. in Environmental Engineering from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) in 1999. Before joining AIT, Mr. Pichet worked as an Environmental Engineer at Visanucom Engineering Consultants Company Limited, Thailand. Pichet worked with Dr.Sutat Weesakul and Dr. Ole Mark in completing a thesis entitled "Dynamic Modeling of Hydrogen Sulfide Production in Sewers". The Chainarong Na Lamphun Prize is awarded from funds contributed by Mr. Chainarong Na Lamphun, an alumnus from the School of Civil Engineering and currently the President and CEO of Index International Co. Ltd.
